Teens Share Anti-Smoking Message With Classmates

Posted:

Tobacco is responsible for five million deaths worldwide each year and some teens in our hometowns are on a mission to spread that message.

A school in Nebraska isn't just using statistics to illustrate tobacco's deadly consequences. Instead, they're turning to a powerful display to show others how many lives are lost.

A total of 1,200 shoes line the bleachers in the Crofton High School gym -- shoes representing American lives lost each day to tobacco-related illnesses.

The Crofton High School group Warriors Against Tobacco organized the tobacco prevention display, named "Project 1200."

"We were just trying to show our classmates the effects of tobacco use and some of the things tobacco companies do to try to lure them into using the products," says Amanda Janssen, a sophomore "No Limits" member.

Students were tested on tobacco trivia and they watched a short video, educating them about the dangers of tobacco products.

"I learned a lot of stuff and like some of my uncles and my family chews and smokes, so I can like pass it on to my family," says Senior Tyler Potts.

The youth movement is part of "No Limits," a state-wide program to expose tobacco companies' manipulative marketing techniques.

Student leaders hope the message impacts fellow classmates.

"I hope it did and I think it did. It affected us, so we hope it affected them too." says Janssen.

The Warriors Against Tobacco plan to keeping presenting Project 1200 to the student body and will do so again next year.

The shoes used in the display were donated by the Norfolk Salvation Army.
