(SIOUX CITY, IA) - Siouxland seniors have a new option when it comes time to move. Staff at "The Pointe at Sunrise" are debuting their new complex, part of the larger Sunrise Retirement Community.

Roger and Glendy Nichols took a leap of faith when they signed up for The Pointe. "A floor plan is all we had when we started out, we hadn't seen the finished apartment," said Roger. He had lived with his wife in Sioux City's Morningside neighborhood for 42 years.

Glendy says she was nervous at first, but now, "I love it," she says, "I really do, and I was the reluctant one." Somewhere between the complex's game room, theatre, and library (which Glendy helped pull together) The Pointe really started to feel like home, she says.

"It's been quite an undertaking but it's been fun," says Bev Zenor, Sunrise's Executive Director.

The Pointe is already about a third full, and most all the remaining apartments are two bedrooms, with furnished appliances and balconies. "This does add yet another element to what we can offer folks," Zenor explained, adding the complex has attracted one couple from Pierre, SD, and a former Sioux City resident who had moved south for better weather. "People are coming to Siouxland to experience their retirement and partly because we have a very good health system in Sioux City."

The Nichols' enjoy the option not to cook every night, with the dining room just downstairs. "We tell people we like soft ice cream seven days a week," Roger laughed, adding, "I suspect with the ice cream we'll be using the physical fitness equipment that's coming in."

It's all part of Sunrise's core mission, staff say, to keep community members independent and active.

The Pointe at Sunrise will offer tours during open houses throughout the weekend.
