Sioux City Could Be Saving Money in Snow Battle

SIOUX CITY, IA -

Reality strikes Siouxland as most of us woke up Friday to a fresh blanket of snow.

From 60 to below zero, bitter winds and ice, we've seen it all this winter, and now you can add snow to the mix.

About two to five inches fell across most of Siouxland giving people a good cardiac workout before heading into the office Friday, something we haven't had to deal with for a while.

Friday folks in Sioux City were digging themselves out from just over two inches of snow, some of the first that's fallen in quite some time.

"If we could have snow like this every winter, I would enjoy winter," says Ron Isaacson, an equipment operator for the city of Sioux City.

A dry winter so far means the city hasn't been battling "Mother Nature," which could mean savings come spring.

"Salt, unfortunately, is what causes pot holes," says Sioux City Mayor Bob Scott. "So the less salt you have to pour on the streets, the less pot holes you we should have in the spring, so we should be saving it two ways, it should be really beneficial if this winter continues."

Plows and drivers have been out in full force since Thursday night clearing Sioux City's more than 500 miles of roads, but even those drivers can't complain.

"I'd have to say this is our best winter so far though, that I can remember, as far as lack of snow to where we are able to get a lot of other work done," says Isaacson.

As winter comes and goes it's a good bet we'll be seeing more of that snow, so remember, when you see those plows on the road:

"Sometimes we're going places where people really don't realize we're going, so if they could stay back and we could avoid any kind of a wreck it would be greatly appreciated," says Isaacson.

With the battle against the snow the way it's going, all of the streets in Sioux City should be cleared by tomorrow.
