Presidential Wax Museum Gives Students Link to History

(SIOUX CITY, IA) - How often do you get to step into the shoes of a famous figure in American history? Students at Clark Elementary school transformed themselves into presidents.

And what better day to do so than on George Washington's 280th birthday.

"We did this last year, and we had a wonderful turn out, so this is our second year and the kids really enjoy doing it," said Rochelle Sitzman.

Sitzman, a third grade teacher at Clark Elementary, said the decision to do a wax museum of presidents was a joint effort between her and the kids.

"We went to the other classes room and she had a bin of all the presidents and we had to put our hand in there and pick a president," said student Santana Graham.  And just like that, their fate was handed to them.

The next couple of weeks were spent researching and writing and today they became a president. Jacie Geesaman was Franklin Pierce.

"I was the handsomest president, I memorized my entire inaugural speech, and it was 3,319 words," she said, detailing the upsides of our nation's fourteenth President.

Here's how the wax museum works: you start at George Washington, and you make your way around the room.  All of the students had to dress up like their presidents with wigs, special outfits and even props. Once you were ready for their speech you simply said, "Tell me your speech."

Needless to say, the students enjoyed getting to share the information they found to kids from Lincoln and Clark Elementary and their families.
